On our drive south to Victoria we stopped overnight in
Kempsey. Being the halfway point, it was the ideal place to stop, and MacK was
just starting to get fractious. He is a really good traveller, but we all have
our limits! We checked into our hotel, and walked through town to find
something open for dinner. This isn’t a particularly easy task in a small
regional town on Boxing Day, and we ended up at the RSL – along with everybody
else in town! After an extended dinner, we walked back to the motel, and that’s
when we saw it. In a home and garden shop on the main street, in pride of place
in the window – the biggest, gaudiest, and most noteworthy nativity scene you
will ever be likely to clap eyes on.
It was drastically reduced (from the original $1800), and we
just had to buy it. Jane’s Mum collects Nativity scenes, and we figured that
she needed something this spectacular to bookend the collection. This thing has
moving bits (in our one the carousel goes backwards, which looks awfully
uncomfortable for the animals) and is supposed to play Silent Night (our one
doesn’t, which may account for the discount).
The reaction from both Peter and Phyl when they unwrapped
the box was brilliant. Phyl was brought to her knees, and struggled for breath
she was laughing so hard! Phyl has promised us that it will not be bequeathed
to us, as it is rude to regift something to the original gifter, and accordingly
Clare isn’t sure whether or not she should be talking to us.
Certainly we hope this will provide the motivation for Phyl
to complete the ‘sew-your-own’ nativity scene we brought her a couple of years
ago from Spotlight!
For comparison, here is a 'normal' nativity scene:
